Santana recognized by peers as 2006 AL Outstanding Pitcher
Another outstanding season earns coveted Players Choice Award and $20,000 contribution in his honor to charity of his choice

MINNEAPOLIS -- In a pre-game ceremony tonight, Twins pitcher, Johan Santana, was honored as 2006 American League Outstanding Pitcher. Selected in a secret ballot of all players in the American League, Johan received the Players Choice Award for an outstanding season in which he propelled the Twins to the playoffs by posting a 19-6 record with a 2.77 ERA and 245 strikeouts. His 19 wins tied him with the Yankees’ Chien-Mien Wang for the Major League lead. He also led the Majors in ERA and strikeouts. This is Johan’s second Players Choice Award, having been named the American League Outstanding Pitcher in 2004. Johan’s teammate, Michael Cuddyer, presented him with his trophy.

In Johan’s honor, the Major League Baseball Players Trust will contribute $20,000 to the charity of his choice. 2006 Players Choice Award winners in all categories will designate charities to receive grants totaling $260,000 from the Players Trust.

Through the Players Trust, Major Leaguers contribute their time, money and celebrity to call attention to important causes affecting the needy and to help encourage others to get involved in their own communities. In partnership with Volunteers of America, the national human service organization, the Players Trust created and helps administer the Action Team, a national youth volunteer program currently inspiring the next generation of volunteers in cities throughout the United States.
