D-backs seal deal with compensation pick Wilson
By Spencer Fordin / MLB.com
The D-backs have reached agreement on terms with Marcus Wilson, their first Compensation Round B selection -- and third pick overall -- in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. Wilson, an outfielder, was taken with the No. 69 overall pick in the Draft and signed for $1 million, a bit of an over-slot from the projected value ($821,000) of the selection. The D-backs have not confirmed the deal.
Wilson, an outfielder from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, Calif., was first noticed at the Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif., and he distinguished himself as a player with future power potential. Wilson turned heads at the Southern California Invitational Showcase hosted in February.
Now that he's signed, Wilson will forgo the opportunity to play college ball at Arizona State University. Wilson, who won't turn 18 until August, was one of the youngest players available in the Draft.
