Kubel a late scratch due to back stiffness

PHOENIX -- The D-backs scratched Jason Kubel from their lineup before Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Padres due to a stiff back.
"Just going through all the stretching, it tightened up," said Kubel, adding that no MRI is scheduled at this point. "Hopefully [Monday's] day off will help. Hopefully, it feels better."
The 31-year-old went 1-for-4 with a double on Saturday and was initially slotted to bat fifth and man left field Sunday before getting pulled. In his place, A.J. Pollock got the nod in center field and Adam Eaton shifted to left.
Kubel, who missed two weeks in April with a strained quad, is in the midst of a down year, batting .234 with just five homers and 27 RBIs.
D-backs call up Roe to bolster bullpen
PHOENIX -- Adding extra bullpen support until Brandon McCarthy returns from the disabled list, the D-backs recalled right-handed reliever Chaz Roe from Triple-A Reno on Sunday to take the roster spot of Tyler Skaggs, who was optioned following his brief rocky start on Saturday.
"It's a no-brainer. We knew we were going to have another starter for Skaggs the next time, so we brought another arm up," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "It gives us more flexibility."
Roe appeared in three games for the D-backs earlier this month against the Mets, tossing 3 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits, including a homer, in his first Major League stint. Since then, Roe has surrendered just one run in seven innings back in the Minors.
"He sucked it up big time, he was dragging," Gibson said of Roe's last call-up. "But he's been doing a good job lately, he's been throwing the ball good in Triple-A."
In 16 total innings for Reno this season, the 26-year-old has a 1.69 ERA with six saves and 17 strikeouts.
• Trevor Cahill (right hip) will start for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday in Oklahoma City and throw around 80 pitches. His first rehab outing came Thursday in the Arizona League. D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said he wasn't sure how many more Minor League starts Cahill will need. The right-hander has been on the disabled list since July 1.
• Although the D-backs have yet to make it official, Gibson said Sunday he anticipates Brandon McCarthy coming off the DL and starting Friday in Boston.
