Putz benefitting from new dietary plan
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- D-backs closer J.J. Putz adjusted his diet this offseason after finding out he, like starter Trevor Cahill, had a food sensitivity to gluten and dairy.
By avoiding those two things, Putz said he dropped nearly 15 pounds without changing his usual workout routine.
"I feel amazing," Putz said. "I'm up at 5:45 a.m., wide awake jumping out of bed. When I lay down to go to bed at 11, I'm out. I don't move when I sleep, I have energy all day."
Putz plans on making the dietary changes permanent.
"It's going to be tougher during the season with the food choices," he said. "Oh, I'll find a way to do it. You just do what you've got to do."
D-backs' Corbin, Skaggs enjoy friendly competition
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Tyler Skaggs, Randall Delgado and Patrick Corbin are the three main competitors for the final open spot in the starting rotation this spring.
While Delgado is a newcomer, having been acquired in the Justin Upton trade this winter, Skaggs and Corbin are very close friends who were drafted the same year by the Angels.
The pair have played together throughout the Minor Leagues and were traded in the same 2010 deal from Los Angeles to Arizona.
"We've been together for all these years, and every time we've gone out there we'd always try to have a better game than the other, and that's just how it is," Corbin said. "We joke about it and have a good time with it."
Corbin said rather than focus on who he is competing with, he's just worried about trying to do the best that he can.
"I just want to continue what I did last year and build off of that," he said. "You can't really go out there and worry about that even though he's a good friend of yours. I think if you go out there worrying about it, I think it's going to affect you in a negative way more than a positive way. That's kind of how I take it. I just think at the end of the day it's just a matter of time for both of us to be up here or somewhere."
• Brandon McCarthy will start Wednesday, Feb. 27 against the Reds with Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill and Wade Miley going each of the following three days.
• D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said he has not yet decided what the rotation will be for the games from Feb. 23-26.
• Saturday was a planned short work day for the D-backs after having more intense days on Thursday and Friday.
The team will have longer, more intense days Sunday and Monday with pitchers facing hitters for the first time this spring. Then, Tuesday will be a short day with the team scheduled to be off the field by 10:30 a.m. MT.
