Gibson sees no problem with Goldschmidt's slide
By Jake Kaplan / MLB.com
The slide caused quite a stir when Hairston said afterward that it was dirty and that Goldschmidt should be suspended.
"It's totally unacceptable," Hairston said after the game. "He jumped over the bag to get to me. He was seven feet past the bag. It was terrible."
Asked his thoughts on Friday for the first time since Hairston's remarks, Gibson said he thought it was "a good, hard slide" and "not a big deal."
"I think we played really hard last series," the skipper said before Friday's series opener against the Phillies. "I would never encourage us to do anything that wasn't within the rules. We do play hard. And I like when we play hard."
Albers joins D-backs' bullpen in Philly
PHILADELPHIA -- After being traded just before Tuesday's non-waiver Trade Deadline, reliever Matt Albers donned a D-backs jersey for the first time on Friday night.
Albers, acquired from the Red Sox along with Scott Podsednik (who was eventually given his release) in exchange for reliever Craig Breslow, gives Arizona another late-inning option in the bullpen. The right-hander has "a power arm," according to manager Kirk Gibson.
In 40 games with Boston, Albers went 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA. The bulk of his work came in the sixth through eighth innings. He will likely be used in a similar role with Arizona, though he said on Friday that he has no preference on when he pitches.
"I was happy to come to Arizona," Albers said before Friday's series opener against the Phillies. "I've heard a lot of good things about this place. Obviously, [it's] a team that's doing well and right in the race, which is really key, too. I'm excited for it. The last couple months of the season kind of get a fresh start, which is nice."
Bloomquist remains out of lineup with back pain
PHILADELPHIA -- Willie Bloomquist, who has been dealing with back pain, was not in the D-backs' lineup for the fourth straight game on Friday.
"I think he'll be available," manager Kirk Gibson said before the game. "I just wasn't gonna put him in the [starting] lineup today."
Bloomquist wanted to start, according to Gibson, but the skipper wants to make sure he's OK first. He was scheduled to take batting practice before Friday's series opener against the Phillies, but rain canceled the D-backs' turn for BP.
The D-backs were set to face Philadelphia's Joe Blanton on Friday night, but just hours before first pitch, Blanton was traded to the Dodgers. Kyle Kendrick made the start, and despite the change, Gibson decided to keep his original lineup.
Entering Friday night's game, Miguel Montero had reached base in 24 of his last 35 at-bats. In that span, Montero was 13-for-25 with nine walks and was hit by pitches twice.
