D-backs keep eye on Scherzer's innings
Team being careful with young right-hander's workload

The right-hander had one of his better outings of the year Wednesday night against the Dodgers when he pitched into the eighth inning. That brought his innings total for the year to 147.
Whether he gets four or five more starts this year will in large part be determined by how many innings he throws in the first four. With this being Scherzer's first full season in the big leagues, the D-backs do not want to increase his innings total too dramatically.
Last season, Scherzer threw 109 innings between Triple-A and the big leagues and the club sent him to the Arizona Fall League to get in another 24 innings. This year, they want to keep him to 170-175 innings.
"The next four outings, if he's six, seven innings a pop, we'll have a decision to make on the final start," D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said.
