Haren named NL Pitcher of the Month

Second time award winner recognized for June performance

PHOENIX -- One of the lone bright spots in an otherwise disappointing month of June for the D-backs was the pitching of Dan Haren.

Wednesday, Haren was recognized for his performance when he was named the National League's Pitcher of the Month.

In six June starts, Haren was 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA. He compiled 36 strikeouts while allowing just 25 hits and eight walks in 41 innings for the D-backs that went 11-16 during the month.

Haren got better as the month went on as he allowed just one run in his final 21 innings. In his final two starts he has tossed 14 scoreless innings.

The 27-year-old Haren was acquired by the D-backs last December in an eight-player deal that saw Arizona ship six prospects to the A's. From the start of Spring Training, the D-backs have been pleased with what Haren's performance, who is 8-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 17 starts.

"Obviously those guys have done well over there," D-backs GM Josh Byrnes said of the players dealt to Oakland. "But it's hard to find a Danny Haren, and the job he's done for us has been what we hoped for."

This is the second Pitcher of the Month Award for Haren, who won the award in May 2007 while in the American League.
