J.J. Putz of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been selected as the winner of the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award for September, it was announced today. This Major League Baseball award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season as voted on by a panel from Major League Baseball.

Putz, who also took home the award in May, converted each of his 10 save opportunities during the month to lead the Majors and tossed 9.2 scoreless innings, allowing just six hits with one walk and 15 strikeouts while helping the D-backs to the N.L. West division title. The 34-year-old right-hander converted a franchise-record 24 consecutive saves since July 27th, surpassing Gregg Olson's 22 straight from June 13-September 22, 1998. Putz was the lone pitcher in the Majors to post at least two 16-save streaks during the season, also accomplishing the feat from April 1st-May 29th. On September 21st against the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, the University of Michigan product struck out each of the three batters he faced in the ninth to preserve an 8-5 victory. Putz finished the season with a career-high 45 saves, two shy of Jose Valverde's single-season club record of 47 set in 2007, and fourth-most in the Majors behind Valverde (49), Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel (46) and Milwaukee's John Axford (46). Putz, who was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, held opponents scoreless in his last 18 games of the season (15.2 innings pitched), and in 24 of his last 26 games. This marks the third Delivery Man of the Month Award for Putz, who also received the award in June 2007 while pitching for the Mariners.

Other relievers receiving votes included New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera (0-0, 0.87 ERA, 9 SV, 10.1 IP, 6 H, 12 SO, 3 BB), who surpassed Trevor Hoffman as Major League Baseball's all-time saves leader; Valverde (0-0, 0.69 ERA, 9 SV, 13.0 IP, 6 H, 16 SO, 2 BB), who converted each of his 49 save chances in 2011; and Joel Hanrahan (1-1, 2.70 ERA, 8 SV, 10.0 IP, 10 H, 10 SO, 3 BB) of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
