Matt Williams returns to Diamondbacks as special assistant
tickets for any Major League Baseball game
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks and General Partner, Jeff Moorad, today announced that Matt Williams has been named Special Assistant to the General Partner. A 17-year Major League veteran, Williams was Arizona's original third baseman, wearing a Diamondback uniform from 1998-2003.

His new role with the franchise will encompass a variety of responsibilities, one of which is already underway as an advisor to manager Bob Melvin during spring training. Williams will also assist the Baseball Operations department, serve as an analyst on 15 Diamondback telecasts and five radio broadcasts during the regular season, as well as host 30 segments of "The Hot Corner with Matt Williams" on Arizona's new pre-game show on 3TV, "Diamondbacks On Deck presented by Coulter Cadillac." Williams will also be active with Arizona's Community Affairs staff, making appearances on the club's behalf.

"One of the many positives that intrigued me about coming to Arizona was the success this organization has experienced in its brief Major League history," said Moorad. "Now that we have defined my responsibilities with this franchise, it's time we begin reconnecting with the successes of the past and anytime you can add a Matt Williams to your staff, you jump at the opportunity. I've known Matty for nearly 20 years and it's an honor for me to be in a position to bring him back to this organization and I look forward to working closely with him."

Originally a shortstop in the San Francisco organization, Williams made the move to third base in 1988 and won four Rawlings Gold Gloves at that position. After helping lead the Cleveland Indians to the World Series in 1997, his lone year with the Tribe, Matt joined Arizona in a post-Expansion Draft trade, helping the Diamondbacks win a trio of Western Division titles, highlighted by the World Series crown in 2001.

A three-time All-Star and three-time World Series participant, Williams hit 378 career home runs, including 99 in a Diamondback uniform. He was the first player in Major League history to hit a World Series home run for three different teams, doing so with San Francisco, the Indians and Diamondbacks. He was also just the fourth player to hit Fall Classic home runs in three different decades.
