PHOENIX —The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today Advanced-Rookie Missoula outfielder Socrates Brito and Dominican Summer League right-handed pitcher Carlos Hernandez have been named the organization’s Minor League Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Month for August, respectively.
Brito, 19, hit .378 (42-for-111) with 8 doubles, 2 home runs, 18 RBI, 20 runs scored and 4 stolen bases in 27 games in August for the Osprey. Brito’s .378 average ranked fifth among all Advanced-Rookie leagues (min. 100 AB) and hit .317 overall this season, seventh best among all D-backs farmhands (min. 60 games). The Osprey outfielder notched 11 multi-hit games while concluding an 8-game hit streak (July 31-Aug. 8) and beginning a 16-game hit streak (Aug. 17-Sept. 3) during the month. The Azua, D.R. native, signed as a Minor League free agent on April 28, 2010.
Hernandez, 18, went 4-0 with a 0.89 ERA (2 ER in 20.1 IP) in 4 starts in August for the DSL D-backs. He averaged 10.62 strikeouts per 9 innings (24 SO) and limited opponents to a .237 average (18-for-76). Hernandez tossed at least 5.0 innings in each outing and concluded the month without allowing an earned run in his final 2 starts (10.0 IP). A native of Santo Domingo, D.R., Hernandez signed a Minor League free agent on January 17, 2012.
