The D-backs made their first cuts of the spring on Monday, optioning four players and reassigning eight others to Minor League camp.

Arizona optioned infielder Pedro Ciriaco, left-hander Leyson Septimo and right-handers Daniel Stange and Cesar Valdez to Minor League camp. Pitchers Tom Layne, Kyler Newby, Wes Roemer, Bryan Shaw, Matt Torra, catcher Konrad Schmidt, infielder Mark Hallberg and outfielder Collin Cowgill were all also reassigned to Minor League camp.

Ciriaco, a speedy infield prospect, hit .296 and stole 38 bases in 121 games with Double-A Mobile in 2009.

After being called up to Reno, Schmidt continued to impress in 2009, tallying seven hits in 16 at-bats to go with a strong season at Class A Advanced Visalia.
