Josh Byrnes, the D-backs executive vice president and general manager, announced Friday that the team has acquired infielder Tony Abreu from the Dodgers to complete the Aug. 31 trade for Jon Garland.Abreu, 24, had a brief stint with the Dodgers, but spent the majority of the 2009 season at Triple-A Albuquerque and Double-A Chattanooga. In eight games for the Dodgers, he batted .250 with one RBI and three walks. In 77 Minor League games, he hit .312 with 22 doubles, 11 home runs and 53 RBIs.
"Tony is a switch hitter with the ability to play many infield positions and can swing the bat," Byrnes said. "He certainly will be involved in the competition for second base and add depth and flexibility to our roster."
Abreu has played in 65 career Major League games for the Dodgers, batting .270 with two home runs and 18 RBIs. In 273 career games at the Triple-A and Double-A levels, he has hit .312 with 19 home runs and 135 RBIs. In 2008, he spent the entire season on the disabled list having suffered discomfort from sports hernia surgery and a right groin injury during Spring Training that necessitated season-ending hip surgery on May 28, 2008.
In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for Abreu, the team designated right-handed pitcher Bobby Korecky for assignment.
