White Sox on the mound: Starter Jeff Marquez gave up three runs on six hits in four innings, walking two and striking out one. Matt Thornton had a smooth return from the World Baseball Classic to the Cactus League, knocking down the Diamondbacks over two scoreless innings of relief in his first effort back with the White Sox. The hard-throwing left-hander, who pitched in relief for Team USA, did not record a strikeout, but he did break three Arizona bats.

Cactus League records: Diamondbacks 9-16, White Sox 12-15-1

Up next: The D-backs return to Tucson, Ariz., on Friday to play host to the Angels at 1:05 p.m. MST. Dan Haren will start for Arizona and be followed by two pitchers -- Doug Slaten and Juan Gutierrez -- who are among those in competition for the final few spots in the bullpen.
