Manny not likely a D-back
Arizona reported as a possible landing spot for slugger
SAN DIEGO -- It appears that Manny will not be Manny in a D-backs uniform.
The Providence Journal reported that the D-backs could be a landing spot for Manny Ramirez if the Red Sox decide to part with the outfielder, but an industry source with knowledge of the D-backs' thinking said it would be "highly unlikely" for him to wind up in Phoenix.
"What I said was, if the Red Sox, if they think they could find a trade, you know, that's going to make their team better and both sides are going to be happy, I'm going to agree," Ramirez told reporters over the weekend.
It's not the first time there have been rumors linking Ramirez to the D-backs in large part because Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes was an assistant GM in Boston and D-backs CEO Jeff Moorad used to be Ramirez's agent.
Ramirez can be a free agent following this season, but his contract also includes a pair of team options at $20 million apiece. The deal was negotiated by Moorad long before he became a member of the D-backs ownership group.
As for the rumors regarding the Braves' Mark Teixeira, the source said the D-backs still appeared to be a long shot as Arizona is unwilling to part with Conor Jackson or its top pitching prospects Max Scherzer or Jarrod Parker.
The D-backs, though, could wind up back in the mix if the Braves' asking price comes down.
