PHOENIX -- There have been many changes with the Diamondbacks in the 10 years since the team played its first game in 1998.

The ownership group has changed, as have the team colors. Managers have come and gone and there is a new baseball operations group in charge.

One thing, though, has remained the same. Turn on the radio to listen to a D-backs game and you'll still hear the voice of Greg Schulte.

Schulte helped introduce a team of Expansion Draft picks to Arizona in 1998 and he's been there for the high of a 100-win season in 1999 and the low of a 111-loss campaign in 2004.

Moreover, his call of Luis Gonzalez's game-winning hit in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series remains etched in the minds of Arizonans.

D-backs fans now have the opportunity to put Schulte on the final ballot for the Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented annually to a broadcaster for "major contributions to baseball."

The award, named after the late broadcaster, National League President, Commissioner, and Hall of Famer, has been presented annually since 1978. Frick was a driving force behind the creation of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and he helped foster the relationship between radio and the game of baseball.

"Having come from the Dodgers, often considered the best in broadcasting, I can honestly say Greg is tops in the game," D-backs team president Derrick Hall said. "He was the first and only voice heard on radio here in Arizona when this franchise became a reality, and has brought countless memorable events to life through the airwaves in a short amount of time. He is the epitome of hard work, passion and talent wrapped up in one comforting voice."

The Ford C. Frick Award is presented annually during the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Each award recipient is presented with calligraphy of the award during the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and is recognized in the "Scribes & Mikemen" exhibit in the Library of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The 2007 recipient was longtime Royals broadcaster Denny Matthews.

Fans can determine three of the 10 candidates on the final ballot by voting at baseballhall.org, beginning Thursday and throughout November. Active or retired broadcasters with a minimum of 10 years continuous broadcast service with a Major League club or a network, or a combination of the two, are eligible

Fans may cast votes for as many as three broadcasters once daily, basing their decisions on four criteria: longevity; continuity with a club; honors, including awards and national assignments, such as the World Series and All-Star Games; and popularity.

The final ballot of 10 candidates, to be announced in early December, will include the three fan selections and seven other candidates determined by a Hall of Fame staff research team. The Frick electorate includes all past winners and six historians appointed by the Hall of Fame.

Before there was Major League Baseball in Arizona, Schulte spent 14 years with the D-backs flagship station, KTAR, where he teamed with legendary NBA announcer Al McCoy on Suns broadcasts while also serving as an analyst for Arizona State University football and basketball and did play-by-play for ASU baseball.
