Gonzalez injured in blowout loss
By Rich Draper / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- The news keeps getting worse for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The D-Backs not only dropped their fourth-straight game, 13-1, to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night at Busch Stadium, keeping them one victory away from clinching a playoff berth. Arizona also lost left-fielder Luis Gonzalez to a separated left shoulder.

Gonzalez was injured when he, third baseman Alex Cintron and shortstop Tony Womack chased a Tino Martinez pop fly and collided in the fourth inning, with Womack's knee apparently slamming into Gonzo's shoulder.

Womack was also shaken up but continued to play.

Gonzalez, who walked off the field wincing at the pain and keeping his left arm still, will be re-evaluated by team doctors Tuesday morning. The injury could range from a mild sprain of the AC ligament or partial or complete tear of the main ligaments connecting the collarbone to the shoulder blade.

This has been a painful road trip for the D-Backs. Two days earlier, starting pitcher Brian Anderson broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot and is probably lost for the postseason.

Arizona's magic number remains at three to capture the NL West flag.

Losing pitcher Rick Helling (9-12), who is pitching for a place in the postseason pitching rotation, had only a so-so outing.

The right-hander gave up three runs on seven hits over five innings. Helling has won only one game and lost four with three no-decisions in his last eight starts.

The winning pitcher was Cardinal starter Jamey Wright (7-13), who went five innings, yielding only a first-inning homer to Junior Spivey.

Leading only 3-1 entering the seventh, the Cards put the game away with 10 runs off relievers Mike Koplove and Greg Swindell.

St. Louis, pounded out 18 hits, scored once in the fourth on Martinez's double and Edgar Renteria's RBI single. The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, as Fernando Vina single, went to third on Eli Marrero's blast off the right-field wall and scored on Jim Edmonds' double.

A Martinez sac fly brought home Marrero.
