D-Backs emphasize pitching
Use 27 of 50 picks on pitchers
By Rich Draper / MLB.com
PHOENIX -- Young arms. Good arms. And people who can catch them.
That's always the name of the First-Year Player Draft game, and the Arizona Diamondbacks kept to that credo, selecting 19 right-handers and eight left-handed pitchers with their 50 picks.
Catchers were a premium as well, with five selected.
"After our first two picks (Sergio Santos and Christopher Snyder) we kind of stayed on the path we've been on the last few drafts, looking for college pitching, and overall we're very pleased," said general manager Joe Garagiola Jr.
The first pitcher tabbed by the D-Backs was Jared Doyle, a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher from James Madison University. At 6-2, 195, he has a classic pitcher's frame and sizzling arm -- he can pop a fastball at 93 mph. "He's a proven All-American and a big-time winner," commented Arizona scouting director Mike Rizzo.
Rizzo had a special draftee himself, catcher Ryan Mahoney of Carmel High School in New York, a 6-4, 225-pounder who bats left-handed and boasts a strong arm.
"That was my step-out pick," said Rizzo of the 18-year-old, who could sign with the University of South Carolina. "I couldn't pass on that guy. I hope we can sign him."
Another top catching prospect is Michael Pierce of Clovis, Calif.
"Pierce really impressed us," said Rizzo. "You can never have too many young catchers. With the ones we already have in the minors, now we'll have kind of a stable of catchers up and down the line."
Overall in the draft? "I think we did a heckuva job," said Rizzo.
