Gonzalez on a tear in Venezuela 01/19/2007 5:30 PM ETBy Tim Leonard / Special to MLB.com
Carlos Gonzalez showed he could do it all in the California League this season. The right fielder batted an even .300 with 21 home runs and 94 RBIs in 104 games for Class A Lancaster. He also had 35 doubles and stole 15 bases. So it comes as no surprise that Gonzalez went on a tear in the last week, going 6-for-18 (.333) to raise his batting average to .289 for Aguilas del Zulia in the Venezuelan Winter League playoffs. Gonzalez has a team-high 10 RBIs in the postseason, despite playing in only nine of the club's 12 games. Gonzalez and six others in the Diamondbacks organization are playing in Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Here's how they're faring: Mexican Winter League 1B Jesus Cota -- Cota saw his first postseason action as a late replacement at first base. He failed to get a hit in his first at-bat of the playoffs. Cota finished the regular season with a .260 average, nine home runs and 28 RBIs in 61 games. IF Agustin Murillo -- Murillo saw action in two games last week and was a combined 0-for-3. He's batting .190 (4-for-21) in eight postseason games for Yaquis de Obregon. Three of his hits were doubles and he also had two RBIs and two runs scored. Venezuelan Winter League RHP Jorge Julio -- Julio hasn't had many opportunities for saves in the postseason as Leones del Caracas has won just three of 12 games. The hard-throwing right-hander made two appearances and did not allow a run in three innings. He's 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA and six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. OF Gerardo Parra -- Parra got his first hit of the postseason last week -- a single. He is batting .077 (1-for-13) in seven games for Aguilas del Zulia. Dominican Winter League LHP Bill Murphy -- Murphy was hit hard for the second straight time last week. He surrendered five runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings for Azucareros del Este. Murphy is 0-2 with a 15.63 ERA in two postseason starts. 2B Emilio Bonifacio -- Bonifacio has produced despite seeing limited action in the postseason. He has gone 4-for-11 (.364) with two walks and two runs in five games for Tigres del Licey. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
