PHOENIX -- Joe Garagiola, Jr. has resigned as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks and has accepted a position with Major League Baseball as Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, as announced today by Diamondbacks President Rich Dozer.

"This is an emotional day for me," said Garagiola. "The Diamondbacks franchise has meant so much to me and my family, and I take great pride in all that we have accomplished. In a short and memorable amount of time, we have built an organization from scratch, and brought the best fans in the game a World Championship. I leave knowing that there are many more great days ahead for this franchise."

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Joe," said Diamondbacks General Partner Jeff Moorad. "He has a tremendous baseball mind that fits well with the needs of our great game. His many contacts, his invaluable experience, and his tenacity for perfection will prove as worthy for our sport as they did for our franchise for all these years."

"Joe has been our team architect since our inception and we will miss him," added Dozer. "Yet our loss is a huge gain for all teams, as he will now be in a position to benefit 30 of us rather than just one. He has created a legacy that includes a winning tradition and a healthy future after placing his stamp on a strong player development system and a defined method of playing the Diamondback way."

Garagiola will begin with Major League Baseball on August 15 and will report to newly-appointed Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Jimmie Lee Solomon, who previously held Garagiola's new post.

Garagiola, who earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from Georgetown University, originally joined the Diamondbacks in 1995. In just seven seasons, he was responsible for building winners of three National League West titles, one National League Championship, and a World Series Championship.

The Diamondbacks have arranged for media interviews to be conducted with Garagiola, Moorad, and Dozer tomorrow, Tuesday, August 2 at 3:00 P.M. in the Press Interview Room on the service level at Bank One Ballpark.
