Many D-backs players are active in community outreach and team-related programs. During the season, players volunteer their time visiting children in hospitals, reading to groups of children, participating in school visits and taking part in fundraisers for the Diamondbacks Foundation. A select group of players take on even a more active role, not only lending their name to programs but also helping create and provide monetary donations for them. Below are some of the important community programs supported and hosted by Diamondbacks players.
Chad Tracy's "Cover-to-Cover" Reading Program
Chad Tracy is the spokesperson for the Cover-to-Cover Reading program, which encourages kids to "finish what they start" and more specifically, encourages children to develop a commitment to, and passion for, reading. In partnership with Communities In Schools of Arizona, this program delivers a strong message that reading at home with a parent or guardian is key to a child's future academic success. During three homes games, the Arizona Diamondbacks host top winners from each school. These children receive great seats for the game, dinner at Friday's Front Row and have the opportunity to participate in an on-field pre-game ceremony with Tracy. D-backs Line Up for Learning
D-backs Line Up for Learning is a school age program centered on three main categories: Healthy Attitude, Healthy Brain and Healthy Choices. Students who complete classroom activities based on these three categories have the opportunity to attend a D-backs game. The top students from each school also have the opportunity to attend a Q&A session with Chris Young who is the D-backs representatives for the program. For more information, call Communities in Schools at 602.252.5312.
O-dog’s Web Gems
The Arizona Diamondbacks and Orlando Hudson donate luxury suites once per month during the season to the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center. Families with children affected by autism are able to enjoy a D-backs game in an environment that is comfortable for the children. These young fans also receive a t-shirt and meet Hudson prior to the game. Hudson also assembles a walk team each year for the Walk Now Arizona event which benefits the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center and Cure Autism Now. In 2006, Hudson and Chris Young joined O-Dog’s Web Gems for the 5K walk around Tempe Town Lake. O-Dog’s Web Gems brought 128 walkers to the event and raised over $2,500. In 2007, Hudson, Chris Young and Eric Byrnes joined O-Dog’s Web Gems for the 5K walk around Tempe Town Lake. O-Dog’s Web Gems brought over 100 walkers to the event who raised over $6,000.
Muscular Dystrophy Association Ambassador
Conor Jackson is the Arizona Diamondbacks ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He helps to promote the MDA Broadcast Auction with the D-backs and offers a Spring Training Clinic with him as an auction item. Jackson also teamed up with Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart in April of 2007 for the Inaugural Conor Jackson & Matt Leinart Celebrity Golf Classic for Augie’s Quest. Augie’s Quest is a division of MDA that raises money for ALS research.
D-backs Hospital Visits
In an effort to help young hospital patients make a quick recovery, Diamondbacks players make special hospital visits during the season and Spring Training. These visits take place at hospitals in both the Phoenix and Tucson areas. In 2007, Conor Jackson, Stephen Drew, Brandon Webb, Chris Young and Micah Owings all participated in visits to Valley hospitals.
